Inspired = Oushak Rugs
![]() |
| I've been searching for the perfect rug for a client. I'm looking for an Oushak. It could be old or new. What I love about these rugs is their rich but muted tones, even new versions feel old. Often found in my favorite shades of coral, orange, pink, blues and brown, each handmade version is unique. The soft wool and natural dyes used give each a warm, worn quality. Most Oushaks are and were made South of Istanbul, Turkey. I was in Hudson Home in Wellesley (outside of Boston) yesterday, they offered a few gorgeous versions but they weren't quite the right color. The rest depicted here are from Landry and Arcari, {also a local showroom}. The top rug is from 1st dibs. |

Hot Off The Presses & Hot On The Floor: Panasonic's Electric Rugs

Panasonic unveiled their new electric area rug, the “No-Constrainst Carpet” at the Tokyo Fiber exhibit describing it as an “innovative hot carpet with the warm, fuzzy appeal of a beloved pet.

The carpet’s luxurious coat of faux fur (available in white, brown, or skunk-like black and white) houses a set of smart heating elements that deliver warmth only to the areas you touch when you cuddle it. Squishy, flesh-like control switches modeled after the paw pads of your favorite furry friend enhance the carpet’s overall zoomorphic feel.
The roasty rug gets 114 degrees out of only 500 watts, and that's the highest setting. Having just moved up east, this sounds like a must-buy for the coming winter.

Unfortunately only available in japan right now, but I'm sure it won't be long before it's warming toes and feet here in the US.

Product Pick Of The Week: The Miles Rug By Big Game

The perfect compliment to yesterday's post about the artful appeal of freeways, would be this fun and fabulous wool hand tufted rug by the creative minds at Big Game.
Called "Miles', this rug of infinite freeway interchanges was inspired by children's games which is the reason it comes complete with three wooden cars!

Plus is More by Big Game
For their 2007 exhibition at the Milan Swiss cultural centre, the three designers from Big-game, Grégoire Jeanmonod (CH), Elric Petit (B) and Augustin Scott de Martinville (F), create the “plus is more” collection. Taking basic elements as starting points, such as a material, a principle or an archetype, Big-game transforms them in a simple way to design functional objects.
The stake of this transformation is to bring a “plus”, while keeping the integrity of the original element. The praise of less is therefore diverted. “Less is more” is still a fundamental principle, but with a slight and unexpected contribution. In a sense, Big-game plays with the cliché attached to Swiss design, and its profoundly functionalist image.

More Carpet Artistry: Meet Reuber & Henning

I've posted some stories on rugs and rug designers (see previous post on Amazed, Ltd) that are nothing short of art. And yet, here's another!
In January, the first Reuber Henning Collection 2007 was presented at [d3] Design Talents IMM Cologne.
Meet Reuber & Henning.

The following is reprinted from their website:
TRIM DOWN TO THE ESSENTIALS: BEAUTIFUL, GOOD RUGS
We come from two different worlds: Franziska Henning studied painting and has been designing artistic rugs for several years. (www.galerie-roehr-ripken.de)
Thorsten Reuber learned something about marketing and sales in the music and new media business.
Once he had caught her infectious passion for the beauty of color and material, it was only natural for them to decide to join forces and create beautiful rugs together: Reuber Henning was born.
Franziska Henning calls her carpets "Poetic Images" - images that "have been inspired by a wide variety of regions, periods and moods."
The designs of our first collection are partly based on German 19th-century silhouette cutouts and traditional Japanese woodcuts.

Our rugs are knotted from fine Himalaya wool and chinese silk following ancient Tibetan handicraft traditions.
We want to create rugs that belong to people, beautiful rugs in the very best quality, which will keep creating a special atmosphere a whole life long, and whose beauty and character only grow stronger with the passing years.

We are newcomers. We want to develop further, make lots of new things and lots of things better - please join us and give us your suggestions and ideas!
