British soldier killed in Afghanistan

A bomb attack has killed a US-led foreign soldier in southern Afghanistan as the foreign death toll there in 2011 nears 400.

The British soldier was killed by an improvised explosive device on Friday, the defense ministry said in a statement on Sunday, AFP reported.

The trooper from 1st Battalion The Rifles died while on a patrol in the Shaparak area of the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand province, the statement said.

According to the independent website iCasualties.org, at least 392 US-led soldiers have died in Afghanistan so far this year.

The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led foreign forces.

The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
