At least five blasts have rocked Parwan province in northern Afghanistan as militants have stormed the house of the provincial governor, leaving 19 killed and 37 wounded, authorities say.

The incident occurred on Sunday when at least five armed men attacked Parwan provincial governor's office in the provincial capital Charikar city, the governor told local television from inside the compound under attack, AFP reported.

"I'm inside," Abdul Basir Salangi told Tolo News, referring to a compound that houses his office and other administration offices in Parwan province, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Kabul.

"So far there have been five blasts," he said.

Interior ministry spokesman Siddiq Siddiqi reported that 14 civilians and five police were killed and 37 others, mostly civilians, injured.

The ministry said that gun battle is continuing between the attackers and the security forces.
